“I’ve come to escort you home!”
Beatrice couldn’t have been more proud of Sybil when she heard that she would be working for Cassandra Atwood. The Grevilles had been struggling for a long time (they couldn’t hide this from Beatrice, even as they had wanted to!) and there was only so much that Beatrice could do for them (and even less that they would accept from her!) and while this new position would not solve all of their problems, it had eased the burden.
Still, it meant that Sybil wasn’t around nearly as often as she’d once been, so Beatrice would often walk towards the Atwood estate in the evenings so she might walk Sybil back home.
“If Howard has been by to see your sister today, I will be shocked! This morning I took his box of combs and put it down in the library - where he would never look.” In fact, Beatrice often wondered if he had forgotten the very existence of the room - she suspected he considered it as useless to him as the servant’s quarters, “His hair is always so unkept in the morning that he wouldn’t dare step outside looking so disheveled and risk having to admit that he spends hours upon his appearance.” She linked her arm with Sybil’s, “He’ll be distracted for days,” Beatrice announced proudly.
“Or at least until he sends Roger out to replace them all,” Beatrice added - knowing her brother would never actually go days without tending to his hair (although one could dream).
“How was your day?” Beatrice asked.
There was a small part of Beatrice that envived Sybil: Sybil who was supporting herself. If Beatrice had the patience and the skills, she might have left her father’s house long ago to live on her own - but to do what? Realistically, she knew she’d make a mess of things if she tried to do anything domestic. One day in Sybil’s shoes, and she’d be out on the streets.
Sybil scanned the room quickly, ensuring all was in order for her early arrival tomorrow. Though many maids lived at the governor’s mansion, itself, Sybil had insisted on maintaining her place at home. Besides, she greatly valued the walk to and from home - it was a pleasant transition between work and relaxation.
Nodding to herself, satisfied that all was in good order, Sybil seized up the last of her items and glanced towards Cassandra. “You’re sure you need nothing more tonight, Miss Atwood?” she inquired. When Cassandra assured her that she did not, Sybil said her goodbyes. The servants’ door felt heavy as she swung it shut behind her, blotting out the candle light and half-blinding herself in the twilight. She smiled softly. Sybil was terribly fond of Cassandra, of course, and unspeakably grateful - but even so, it was a pleasant thing for work to be over and, at last, to be heading home, free of her duties until tomorrow.
As she turned, a voice hailed her. Sybil’s lips looped into a bright smile. Turning, she practically skipped up to her, entwining her arm with Beatrice’s own. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” commented Sybil, happily, as a sweet, cool breeze tousled their hair. Sybil welcomed the coming of cooler weather and, even more so, the storm promised by the ominous dark clouds squatting overhead, their thunderous bellies lit up in tangerine and coral by the setting sun. Sybil’s smile widened, hearing Beatrice’s next words and Sybil cocked her head. “Almost as beautiful,” she added, drolly. “As your brother.”
Giggling, Sybil shook her head in mock seriousness. “Certainly not! How could a man of his stature bear to disappoint every lady - and the gentlemen, too, for that matter - in town, appearing in less than a perfect state? He’d risk all his self-respect! Worse, still, to enter a room full of books,” she added, rolling her eyes. After all, books formed one of the two friends’ many shared passions - and one more thing they loved which Howard hated. “You know, wait long enough and I wager we could sell his own comb to him for an exorbitant price, as he’ll certainly never find it again in that library, and by that time he’d be willing, no doubt, to spend his very last shilling if needs be.”
She smiled, squeezing Beatrice’s arm. “Oh, but you are a good friend. Thank you for defending my poor sister in my absence! Poor Elizabeth is much too kind to dismiss Howard altogether as she ought.” It was a sore point in their relationship and a constant worry on Sybil’s mind. Fortunately, however, between the two of them, Elizabeth Sybil made just enough to support themselves and Cecily in her illness, meaning there was no necessity for such an ill-suited match as Howard. That, she supposed, was a small mercy.
Sybil grinned softly, suppressing an amused giggle. “It was a good day,” she replied. “Joseph managed to fall up the stairs today rather than down them, though unfortunately he was carrying the powder for the wigs and managed, not only to ruin the powder, but also to paint himself pale as a ghost and giving Mrs. Hawkins quite the scare as that is just what she thought he was.”
Joseph was a very sorry footman at the great house who was known for his ridiculous pratfalls but, due to his diligence and kindness of spirit, he had managed to keep his position, despite his many mishaps. Mrs. Hawkins was the cook and as superstitious a woman as ever there had been. “I do believe, even now that the matter is quite resolved and the specter proven beyond doubt to be nothing more than poor Joseph covered in powder, Mrs. Hawkins is still convinced that the house is haunted. Last I saw her, she was throwing salt over her shoulder, so we may have some further chaos to dodge, come tomorrow.”
Sybil giggled, despite herself. She was fond of her co-workers, how ever much fun she poked at them, but she still never passed up the opportunity to amuse herself with the foibles of the people around her, particularly when she had the opportunity to share them with her friend. “And you? I hope, despite having to steal his comb, you managed to evade Howard, as much as possible, today!”
I love that idea! I definitely think that Anna does what hse can to help the Grenville sisters short of just handing them wads of cash! (which she’d do in a heartbeat but she understands there’s a whole level of pride, etc.) I’m sure she would have set her straight to Cassandra with a whole slew of references. And I do think Anna would love seeing sybil around! she very much misses her days of traipsing about with the grenville sisters AND having someone around who knows tom/feels the same sense of sadness about all that would definitely be a bit of a comfort.
awwwww anna <33333 honestly tho she’s right!! sybil is a reckless combination of stubborn and proud esp when it comes to things like charity even tho she could really, really use it #facepalm Honestly, it took a loT for her to even ask anna to help her get employment - she def wouldn’t accept cash she hadn’t earned w/o a fight hahaha
KATE!!! im cryin about these two sitting around together, reminiscing about days past!!!!! also, for what it’s worth, sybil super shipped tom and anna bakc in the day!!!!! tho honestly sybil’s pr confident tom must be dead, so she thinks that’s irrelevant now accept that she, herself, cherishes anna and, for tom’s sake, thinks of her like family (even tho family-that-never-was since she and tom never got together) and i crY!!!!!!!!
So she probably has heard through the grapevine that Cassandra was once engaged to John and that he turned out to be a thief (and later became a pirate) and the engagement was broken off after that, for obvious reasons haha. But she probably doesn’t know that Cassandra was still planning on eloping with him, etc. and that he never showed!! (but there’s definitely still enough that she knows that certainly account for the trust issues haha)
Anyway, Kate the Great is on board with Anna being the reason Sybil got this job and I love that!!!! I think Cassandra honestly would be more willing to give Sybil the chance to work for her due to that reference - especially since she doesn’t have any other experience working in a household like this one and yeah.
Also, I think Cassandra was always a fair and kind mistress, but she never expected to become friends with Sybil! She definitely tends to keep new people at an arm’s length ideally forever haha but I think Sybil just broke through all of Cassandra’s defenses pretty quickly and honestly I think she was just really good for Cassandra, in more ways than one!!! Not that she’s ready to be more open and trusting towards strangers, but she’s definitely a little more willing to admit that there are good people out there outside of her brother and her like two friends haha
Yeah, I do think Cassandra knows about Tom (I can see Anna telling her honestly when she’s trying to get Sybil a job there? Especially since I think - if I remember correctly - Sybil took the job b/c Tom was gone? Or was it because he’d just lost the shop???), ANYWAY, either way, I’m sure she knows now and I do think that all signs point to him being dead, as far as Cassandra can tell, so she’s not sure that there’s much she can do, on that front and I do think she assumes that they are fine financially since Sybil’s never given her any reason to believe that they aren’t!!
daksjfkjdsf god yeah honestly can you imagine how faST that story wouldve ground through the rumor mill????? like, the governor’s daughter of all ppl and this kid who’d been picked up off the streets to be made respectable which was probs scandalous enough and then THAT like you know town was EXPLODING w it hahaha so yeah no ur probs right she probs does know basically all the gory details by now, probs before she ever really got to know Cassandra #yay #thanksrumormill sybil, learning about that: ‘wow good thing my brother’s here and alive and definitely not a pirate! can you imagine how much that owuld suck?????’ ;D but yeah by the same token, i can def see where its smth they’ve never discussed unless cassandra volunteered smth about it bc yeaH i feel like that’s just not smth you bring up alsdkjflksdjfkjsdkjf (and it sounds like cassandra hasn’t volunteered anything hahaha)
YAAAAYYYY!!!!! our girl anna coming through once again <333333 honestly i do think this job made a HUGE difference for their family!!!!! like, even in debt bc of looking for tom and down a paycheck also bc of tom plus w cecily sick, they were able to keep their heads just barely above water, but sybil def doesn’t feel that would’ve been possible w/o it and she’s just! so! grateful!!!!
oh, yeah!! ur 100% right!!! iirc, that was the reason she took the job!! so yeah that probs came up too when anna was like ‘yo you should hire this girl - she’s the one whose bro just disappeared’ or whatever?? tho yeah it could’ve been the shop!! honestly im not attached to either so im down for whatever you wanna do, if one works better than the other!! the only thing i can think of that it’d really impact is whether tom knows sybil has that job which may or may not matter idk???? so yeah im down for whatever!!
Also, Kate the Great mentioned the night of sybil’s kidnapping and i realized i didn’t really know anything about how that went down so i wanted to run somet things by you!! so, first off, i deF think they had that moment a la potc1 where sybil’s like ‘there’re here for you, mistress. ur the gov’s daughter,’ basically, and sybil helped cassandra hide/escape somehow, either bc she was in cassandra’s room and answered cassandra’s general description or like they changed clothes or she even claimed to be her so cassandra could get away???? im literally down for anything!!! but obv sybil got the raw end of the deal w all that hahaha and yeah!! what do you think went down that night?
honestly the world basically ended for elizabeth when she heard sybil had been taken by pirates… like after tom disappearing and cecily being ill she sort of felt like she’d lost one of the few stable things in her life! (not to mention bea then running off as well so the most stable thing in her life is… howard bothering her? XD)
honestly as soon as she heard from… whomever…. that sybil is possibly alive she was ready to move heaven and earth to get her back!!! hence howard!! (ugh) honestly her sister being saved is what has pushed her over the edge with him otherwise she might’ve kept trying to find SOMETHING else to help them but alas…
also just imagine the happiness that will (hopefully) occur when sybil returns ESPECIALLY IF TOM IS IN TOW. elizabeth just might die of happiness (…unless she’s become a layton :O)
UGHHHHHH honestly elizabeth deserves so mucH bettER im creYYYYY and honestly sybil feels so v much that elizabeth is alone, in a lot of ways, and is sO determined to get back to her!!! HOWARD BOTHERING HER IS THE MOST STABLE THING IN HER LIFE BYEEEEEE
I’m guessing it was @ohscassandra who told elizabeth and cecily what happened to sybil?? but yeah idk??? i actually need to chat w lizzy a bit about that whole night so yeah then we can get you more details!! but, yeah, i think the last thing they heard was that she had been carried off by pirates and everything beyond that was unclear. im not even sure if they know that she was kidnapped bc they ~thought she was cassandra? but im guessing it was not unlike that scene in potc1 where sybil was like: ‘go hide! they’re here for you bc you’re the governor’s daughter!!’ except then, when cassandra was gone, they just assumed that girl closest to her in age and general description must be cassandra and grabbed her????? but yeah im not 100% sure!
also howard is deF highkey assuring her all the time that he’s doing his utmost to find sybil and is playing up all the back-breaking work he’s doing and also how it’d be so much easier to follow leads bc ppl would cooperate more if he were sybil’s family member like, oh idk…say….her brother-in-law (cue the sound of sybil screaming in the bg tbh)
GOD CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT REUNION!!!! and they return w the cure to cecily’s illness!!!! ;DDDD no, but likE sybil’s honestly gonna be like ‘is this it? have i just finally snappED or maybe im dead and this is hell and poor tom is alsO in hell’ basically when she sees him on that pirate ship likE alksdjfkljdsf she won’t be able to believe her eyes!!!!!! and then omG all the happy tears when they’re finally reunited IM CREYYYYY!!!!!!!
UNLESS SHE’S BECOME A LAYTON NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LKJASDLFJljlasjdfljdf uGH omg imaging his sisters draining their last few resources looking for him would!!!! kill!!!! thomas!!!!!!!! I don’t think he took that into consideration tbh - like how they would react when he was just gone!!! TBH he didn’t think that he’d be gone this long and he definitely didn’t think he wouldn’t be able to just go home whenever he wanted!!! I do think this idea was a very impulsive one and one he may have decided against if John Blackwood hadn’t been at the right place at the right time (or the wrong place at the wrong time haha?)
ANYWAY he is ALSO going to fREAK out when he sees her because obviously he misses her a lot/has worried about her/IS nOT at all pREPARED to see her (although def worried that she might have been there when they captured cassandra and, while he doesn’t think she’d be a hostage - definitely has considered the possibility that she’s dEAD!!!!) And yeah that will be super emotional ++ she will know immediately that he’s a pirate and he has definitely thought a lot about how he was going to explain himself, turning up with the rest of the pirate crew wasn’t exactly how he wanted the news broken to her!!!
He does feel she has EVERY right to be angry with him!!! (He’s angry w/ himself tbh!!!) Although he does feel like he should have seen this coming!! He’s tried so hard to provide for them and do it well but he consistently fails and like … why should this be any different!?!!?
ALSO omg I feel like this will be super emotion for both John and Thomas haha John who is expecting to see Cassandra and doesn’t … and Thomas who is nOT expecting to see Sybil and does and alksjflkajfljflsdkjflkdsfjl
dakdsflsdfj lbr it was def a case of john being in the wrong place at the wrong time and not the other way around alksjfklsjdaf heehee
ugHHH the mutual freaK oUT alksjflkjsdfjk you know there’s just! so! much! emotion!!!!! going on!!!! also literally everyone standing around will be supER confused bc first, likE, from John’s reaction it obv ~isn’t Cassandra but like Tom obv knows her and there’s lots of emotion going on and like ????? what????? is???? happening????? and also Edward is like DISGUSTING!!!! bc he deals well w emotion and also bc he’s been publicly humiliated by all this lakdsjfklsdjfsd goD i feel like he might demand the ransom he was hoping to get from a literal freaking GOVERNOR for cassandra atwood of tom for sybil back and he’s like ‘otherwise imma feed her to the fishes right here and now’ basically laksjdfkljdsf #dramaqueen sybil @ tom: ‘he’s just being dramatic…………….i……thiNK’ laksdjflkdjsf also sybil, racking her brain for things she’s overheard that might help: ‘par…ley?’ ;D edward: ‘youre noT a pirate and also youre alreaDy ADDRESSING THE CAPTAIN so that gets you absolutely zilcH’
ANYWAY!!!! TOM THINKS SHE MIGHT BE DEAD BYEEEEEEEE THAT’S SO SAD IM UPSETTTTT THEY BOTH THINK THE OTHER MIGHT BE DEAD GOD WERE SO MEANNNN adkfjadskljfdksf THATS NOT HOW HE WANTED TO BREAK THE NEWS SDFS LKASJFKJSDKF sybil, seeing hes obv a pirate: *looks directly into the camera like she’s on the office*
honestly, that’s gonna be both the best and worst moment!!! bc as soon as they start dragging her above decks after some sort of obv battle, she’s like ‘this is it this is literally how i diE’ and then like its some dread pirate captain and she’s like ‘great im gonna get full on eviscerated i haven’t gotten a moment’s peace since i was captured and now i dont even get to die peacefuLLY’ but then she sees tom and she’s like ‘wtf are you doing here???? are they killing you too???? are you a ghost and im already dead?????? omG wait no ur one of them??????’ honestly at first she’s just gonna be sO confused tbqh hahah and then basically EVERY EMOTION as she realizes he’s not dead!!!! he’s ok!!!!! but then processes why and how this all happened and just…everything!!!!! anyway!!! my basic point is she’s gonna be hella overwhelmed and also super terrified at first so its gonna take awhile to process everything hahaha but the anger wiLL come hahaha
both john and tom simultaneously but for opposite reasons: ‘what the actual fuCK’ ;DDDD no but 100%%%%%% John is honestly lowkey an emotional basket case building up this moment and then not???? seeing cassandra, and i feel like he literally just sees sybil, stares at her, maybe says ‘mm, nO’ in the way that only tom hardy caN, and just turns on his heel and leAVES to go brood basically lkasdjfkljsdf and literally everyone from both sides are just like ‘???????????’
They’d made anchor in Tortuga and most of the crew was eager to go ashore - food, drink, and women awaited them on land. Oliver had been one of the few to selflessly stay behind to guard both the ship and the prisoner. He said he was tired (which was a lie nobody believed). The truth was, he’d hoped to have some time alone with Sybil where his uncle wouldn’t either cut things short (or worse, say something that might embarrass him).
Unfortunately, his plan had backfired because when he went down to see Sybil, she was asleep and he had no choice but to sulk back up above deck and do what he’d foolishly agreed to do.
From the crow’s nest, Oliver sat in the dark, listening to the sounds of drunken patrons of the town; laughter and shouts, music and gunfire all in equal measure. For what felt like hours, Oliver kept his watch, wishing he was a part of the comotion below. He was so distracted by it all that, at first, he didn’t even notice the noise that was coming from the deck below.
He peered down and, in the dark, he saw Sybil Greville moving as quietly and as quickly as she dared towards the spare row boat which, he gathered, she meant to lower into the ocean to make her escape.
Although he typically liked to make an entrance (he got that from his uncle), Oliver could be both silent and agile when the occasion called for it and, without making a sound, he slowly climbed down from the crow’s neck under the cover of darkness, until he made it back down onto the deck where he watched, unnoticed by Sybil, in amusement as she struggled to untie the boat.
“You really ought to reconsider that,” He said, crossing his arms, “Tortuga’s no place for a respectable girl - especially not one of your high birth,” He added, sarcastic, mocking. “You’ll find no kind help there. And I’m not sure you will make it all the way back to Port Royal in that.”
“Oh, come on!” she hissed, struggling in the dark with an elaborate sailors’ knot. “Bloody pirates!” Though Sybil had read about knots (there were very few subjects she hadn’t read about, simply because if the opportunity for reading came her way, she seized it with alacrity), understanding the theory behind them was an entirely different thing from attempting to undo a rather intricate knot, particularly when she could hardly see it.
Up until this point, the rest of her escape had gone precisely as she might have hoped. Having overheard plans (she was confident she had not been intended to hear) to make dock, Sybil had made a plan so simple, she felt confident it could work - if everything went perfectly according to plan. In fact, it probably would have worked, had it not been for the rather simple fact that she had fallen asleep at the wrong moment. Her plan had been, essentially, to take advantage of the low security and the probable disappointment of those few sailors left aboard and make her escape that way. She’d planned to invite the pirates in to have a drink with her - since everyone else was having fun - and get them all drunk (only pretending to drink, herself) and slip out while they were passed out. She knew this would work because, in her observation, becoming drunk was a sailor’s favorite pastime and, once she was on dry land, it would be easy to blend in amidst the sea of faces.
Unfortunately for her, however, Oliver, unbeknownst to her, had come in while she was still asleep (after all, her plan required being up all night, so she had decided a nap was in order) and had accordingly left to see to his duties rather than accepting her invitation (which she had been certain he would not decline, if given) to keep her company with a drink or two. Oliver had never, to her knowledge, appeared but two other crewmen had and, insofar as they were concerned, the plan was going smashingly. Fortunately for her, one of them had had the key and so she’d made her escape while he snored away in her cot - a trade she’d been quite content to make.
She had been rather stealthy and, in fairness, had it not been for Oliver’s vantage, she might have gotten away with it but, despite knowing that there was a crow’s nest, she had failed to consider that anyone aboard might be looking at her from above and, thus, her efforts at concealment had been to no avail.
In truth, her perfect plan hadn’t gone nearly so well as she thought it had from the beginning. For one thing, in order to convince the sailors to join in, she’d had some to drink and, while not nearly as much as the rest of them, she hadn’t had much to eat and even the little bit she had had, had gone straight to her head. In addition, her calculations had failed to incorporate how many people might be aboard, because she simply had no idea what sort of number that would entail and, finally, lowering a row boat into the water was proving to be much more the task of two or more sober, able-bodied and experienced pirates than the work of a single tipsy lady’s maid.
Still, Sybil was nothing if not stubborn and she was powering through as nobly as anyone could, despite the fact that either her head was spinning or the ship was rocking rather furiously. “Ugh!” she snarled, giving a ferocious tug at the rope.
Hearing a voice behind her, Sybil yelped and spun around to face the intruder, whipping a wooden ladle (the closest thing to a weapon she’d managed to get her hands on) and brandishing it between them. “Oliver? I thought you were ashore.” She paused, eying the ladle, the pirate, and the ladle again. “Don’t think I won’t hit you!” The threat sounded pathetic even in her own ears, but it was the only thing she had in her arsenal. “I have to go home! You know that, don’t you?” Turning, she gave the rope another tug, hoping against hope it would magically work for her.
“Tortuga?” she whispered, turning back to him. She hadn’t known precisely where they were, until that moment, but the knowledge filled her with even greater uncertainty. She’d heard all sorts of colorful stories about the place and, high birth or low, she had to agree: it was hardly the place for her. Still, she determined, squaring her shoulders, she had to try. Her sisters needed her. “Perhaps it is Tortuga that shall have no help from me!” she declared, immediately frowning at her ladle. The retort had sounded far better in her (admittedly somewhat muddled) head. “Oh, you know what I mean! Just…let me go,” she whispered. “You know you’ll get nothing in Port Royal for me and then what happens to me? I may as well try my luck here. I expect I’ll get no better from your uncle when he learns the truth.”
I’m CRYING b/c I feel like having Sybil as a friend would be so great for Roger but he won’t eveR ConsIDER THAT!!! B/c she’s pretty much the devil as far as Howard is concerned and so he does not trust anYTHING she says!! (even when it makes so much sense haha)
Anyway, he just doesn’t understand her hatred of Howard (The Greatest Man to Walk the Earth) and assumes that she must just be jealous of the attentions he’s showing her sister because there’s literally no other reason that one would hate Howard and try to break up his future engagement!!!!
- roger: i know it’s hard for you, but you should be grateful that howard will be your brother!!!! i’d give anything for that honor!!!
- sybil: *stares into the camera like she’s on the office*
lksdjflksjdfkjsd honestly she wouLD!!!!!! like, she totally would’ve stood up to Howard and pushed him, kindly but surely, to do the same and to be himself and all of that!! but, as it is, she sees him as Howard’s toady first and foremost and isn’t too cool w him hanging out bc she 100% feels like he’ll do anything howard wants and basically as long as roger’s in their lives, so is howard and obv she’s just super against howard!!!!!!! She’s like ‘if you ever knock howard off ur back, call us…until that day tho forget our number’ basically
SHE’S JUST JEALOUS ALSKDJFLKSDJFJSD im screaming and sO IS SHE LAKSDJFKLAJSDKFJ also howard 100% supports this message lkasjdfkljdsjf (altho i realized last night he ~might think that sybil and beatrice as lesbians alksdjkdfjsfj bc why elsE would beatrice be willing to risk her life to help someone???? if she’s not getting laid???? it doesn’t add up so it muSt be the lesbian thing klajsdklfjdsjf buT honestly in his mind sybil being a lesbian whose ALSO jealous of howard’s attentions to elizabeth aren’t mutually exclusive bc obv EVERYONE is attracted to howard, no matter their sexuality #facepalm)
ID GIVE ANYTHING FOR THAT HONOR SHUT UP IM CRYIN honestly, sybil is just like ‘what even is this guy’s life?????????’ every single time she sees him like all his choices???? whY would anyone???? she’s so confused lkadsjflkjdsf honestly i feel like she does give him unsolicited advice a lot and like 95% of the time its some variation of just dumP howard you’ll be so much better off alksdjflksjdfkjsd bc like obv roger is a super sweet guy he’s just in this super toxiC dynamic somehow
obv roger’s been a really good friend to cecily through her illness and honestly????? sybil could never thank him enough for that!!!! that means the world to her!!!! and actually???? weirdly???? i feel like that’s a small ray of hope to her rn (even tho it also looms behind the stormcloud that is howard bc roger’s def there and, since sybil’s not, howard’s def going w her so???? double edged sword there) but she knows if elizabeth has to go out, roger’ll probs be able to be there to look after cecily!!! and that just means so! much! to her!!!! but yeah it also worries her bc he’s probs bringing howard around and like NO THANKS!!!! so honestly sybil isn’t even sure what to hope for w all of that!!!!
